Original posts to the 1630 list:Subject: [1630] Description of insertion
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 02:27:12 EDT Margo, I am not an expert on insertions, but I do like to use them. An insertion is a beautiful strip of embroidery inserted usually into a little girl's dress or even a boy' s shirt to embellish it. Heirloom Pillows, Ladies blouses, and many other things can be decorated with it, without it being on a strip. The Swiss embroideries are quite costly, like in Martha Pullen's catalog. We try to emulate it on our beautiful machines. The Heirloom people on this list use it, I know. It can be stitched on organdy, batiste, or other fabric suitable for strips, or used to decorate something in a line. I am going on vacation for 2 weeks--will post some more insertions when I return. Refa [from a later post:] To prepare fabric for stitching: 1. Cut a strip of cotton organdy about 2 1/2 - 3" wide. Soak strip in cup of Sew Perfect. Let dry. Press strip. This will allow you to stitch heavy thread without puckering. 2. Cut strip into strips about 6" to allow you to stitch several different insertions.

Subject:[1630] Re: 1/2 pattern twist
Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 10:33:29 EDT On the 2 corner motifs that I submitted this week, a fun thing to do is everytime you turn your fabric, click on the "begin" spot, and you will get a different design on some patterns. Try T 1, or R 2/3. It's interesting to see what happens! Refa in New Orleans
Subject: [1630] Insertions
Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 18:11:31 EDT I have been experimenting with different patterns for insertions and have combined several that are very pretty. I will post 2 and see if you want more. 1. Cut a strip of cotton organdy about 2 1/2 - 3" wide. Soak strip in cup of Sew Perfect. Let dry. Press strip. This will allow you to stitch heavy thread without pucker. 2. Cut strip into strips about 6" to allow you to stitch several different insertions. 3. Use soft green thread on first run:
4. Second run:

Make flower inside crescent (If you wish more thread to show on flower, hold reverse button down, and it will repeat flower backwards.) Refa in New Orleans

Subject: [1630] Re: 2 more insertions
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 07:55:52 EDT For insertions, an irregular line is usually more attractive (plus you don't need to be so exact with it).
#1Green thread
When machine stops with needle down, press begin, mirror image horizontal. Make another half pattern. When machine stops with needle down again, press begin, and clear mirror image, and do another half pattern, continue this sequence. This makes a lovely green vine with long leaves. 2nd run: pink thread
Place one flower close to tip of long leaf on the inside.
#21st run: green thread
This makes a beautiful green leaf and vine across the strip.
Pink thread flower:
Place flower wherever you choose. I placed mine at the base of the leaf.
Enjoy! Refa
Subject: [1630] White on White Insertions
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 14:19:02 EDT Here are 2 insertions that are pretty all in white.
#1
This makes leaves all across the strip in a zigzag pattern.
Now a tip on this last one: Make the first design, compass 8, next design, compass 8. This leaves a nice spot to insert one heart design in another color where the compass stitches are. Heart design I used is F 2/9
Enjoy! Refa
Subject: [1630] Another insertion

I'm back from vacation, and I'll post a pretty insertion. Refa
